GitHits is the code context layer for Claude Code. It provides two capabilities: (1) Code navigation: indexed search, grep, and file reading across packages from 11 registries (npm, PyPI, Crates, Hex, Maven, NuGet, Go, RubyGems, Packagist, vcpkg, Zig) and any GitHub repository by URL, plus package metadata like docs, changelogs, vulnerability advisories, and dependency graphs, all without cloning. (2) Code examples: verified, canonical usage patterns drawn from global open source with source attribution and license provenance. Together, these give Claude deep visibility into the libraries and repos you're actually working with and real examples when you need them. Requires a free GitHits account (githits.com).
Why this score
Popularity score: 70/100 from public GitHub signals only. It shows how widely used and maintained this is, not how well it works. Not included yet: the fake-star check. The security scan is shown separately and doesn't change the score. How we rank
Security
Scanned Oct 22, 2026 at commit 671ed737d54c, first 300 source files (it's a large repo), with Cisco's open-source skill-scanner.
What its code does:
- Runs shell commands Common for dev tools. Read the commands it runs.scripts/pkg-ecosystem-audit.ts:1, scripts/run-proxy-node-smoke.ts:1, src/services/exec-service.ts:1 and 2 more
- Runs code it builds while running (eval or exec) Harder to read ahead of time, since the code is assembled while it runs.src/services/exec-service.ts:105 and 1 more
- Includes scripts in hidden folders Folders starting with a dot are easy to miss when you read a repo..lintstagedrc.js
A scan lists patterns in the code. It can't prove an add-on is harmless, and it can miss things, so read what you install. How we scan
