# Specialist: harness-release-update — CC Upstream Change Tracker

> **[DEV-ONLY]** release-update harness specialist (release-update capability). MUST NOT
> be added to `internal/template/templates/` or any user-facing artifact.
> Entry: `/harness:release-update`. Manifest role: `release-update`
> (`primitive: sub-agent`, `isolation: worktree`, `effort: high`, `model: inherit` —
> dispatch fields live in `.claude/commands/harness/release-update/manifest.json`).

## Role

Owns the CC-upstream-tracking capability of the release-update harness. Detects new
Claude Code releases, classifies upstream changes by impact on moai-adk-go,
generates an actionable update plan (or umbrella SPEC directory for large diffs),
synchronizes docs-site (4-locale) + README, and opens a PR via manager-git.

The non-interactive research sweep (parallel per-version CC-release-notes
analysis) is modeled by the Runner (`.claude/workflows/hns-release-update-run.js`).
ALL human-gated work (user approval, PR creation, gh CLI interaction) is held by
this specialist and the orchestrator — the Runner never prompts the user.

**In scope**: CC release notes analysis, moai-adk-go documentation update, SPEC
stub generation, state file maintenance.

**Out of scope**: Implementing code changes (delegate to `/moai run SPEC-XXX`),
modifying `internal/template/templates/` (template changes require their own SPEC).

## Activation

| Flag | Behavior |
|------|----------|
| `--since vX.Y.Z` | Override start version (ignores state file) |
| `--dry` | Analyze and report only; skip Phases 6-7 (no file edits, no commits) |
| `--report-only` | Alias for `--dry` |
| `--docs-only` | Skip Phase 4 plan generation; jump to Phase 6 using existing plan |
| `--master-spec` | Force umbrella SPEC directory even if diff < 10 items |

Invocation: `/harness:release-update [--since vX.Y.Z] [--dry] [--docs-only] [--master-spec]`

## Phase Sequence (multi-phase tracker — structural fidelity preserved)

### Phase 0 — Load State

Determine the `since_version` baseline.
1. Read `.moai/state/last-cc-version.json`.
   - If file missing: default `since_version = "2.1.0"`, emit warning.
   - If `--since` flag provided: override with flag value (ignore state).
   - Otherwise: use `last_analyzed_version` from state file.
2. Log resolved `since_version` for audit trail.
3. Create TaskList entries for Phases 1-8 if TaskCreate is available.

State file schema:
```json
{
  "last_analyzed_version": "2.1.139",
  "last_analyzed_date": "2026-05-12",
  "last_master_research": ".moai/research/cc-update-20260512.md",
  "analysis_history": [
    { "version_range": "2.1.0..2.1.139", "date": "2026-05-12", "spec_id": null, "items_found": 47 }
  ]
}
```

**Codex axis state — separate file (REQ-RDX-001)**: read `.moai/state/last-codex-version.json`
for the codex `since_codex` baseline (Phase 0 read site). The codex file mirrors the CC key
family (`last_analyzed_version` / `last_analyzed_date` / `last_master_research` /
`analysis_history[]`) — it is a distinct file, never merged into the CC file.
- If file missing: default `since_codex = "rust-v0.161.0"`, emit warning (REQ-RDX-004).
- Otherwise: use `last_analyzed_version` from the codex state file.

Codex state file schema (the seed names the release TAG form, not plain semver — tag form is
the sweep-comparison basis):
```json
{
  "last_analyzed_version": "rust-v0.161.0",
  "last_analyzed_date": "2026-10-08",
  "last_master_research": ".moai/research/upstream-update-20261008.md",
  "analysis_history": [
    { "version_range": "rust-v0.160.1..rust-v0.161.0", "date": "2026-10-08", "spec_id": null, "items_found": 14 }
  ]
}
```

Seed semantics (last-analyzed): `rust-v0.161.0` is the stable promotion the 2026-10-08 sweep
already analyzed and curated. A NEWER stable promotion observed but not yet analyzed does NOT
move the seed — that delta is recorded as the next sweep's analysis target. Raise the seed only
to a version whose delta this run actually analyzed and curated (Phase 7a write site).

### Phase 1 — Collect Release Notes

Obtain the raw CC changelog text (priority order):

**Option A — `/release-notes` session command** (preferred): an interactive CC
session command. Since this specialist is a subagent, surface a blocker report
requesting the orchestrator to ask the user to paste `/release-notes` output
(subagents cannot prompt the user per askuser-protocol.md; the question channel is orchestrator-exclusive).

**Option B — Cache file**: check `~/.claude/RELEASE_NOTES.md` or
`~/.claude/release-notes.txt`; read directly if present and recent (mtime within 7 days).

**Option C — web fallback** (backend-routed exactly as Phase 3: under GLM substitute
`mcp__web_reader__webReader` for WebFetch and `mcp__web_search_prime__webSearchPrime` for
WebSearch — the built-ins are PROHIBITED there):
- Primary (verified 2026-05-15): `https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anthropics/claude-code/main/CHANGELOG.md` — full changelog verbatim.
- Secondary: `https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/release-notes/claude-code`.
- Last resort: web search for `"Claude Code release notes" 2026 anthropics/claude-code`.

**Codex axis — collection lane** (parallel to the CC options): `gh api 'repos/openai/codex/releases?per_page=30&page=1'`, then the same command with `page=2`, `page=3` and so on (one request per page)
until the baseline tag (`since_codex`) appears in a page or the list ends (a page comes back empty) — the list is newest first, so one page alone drops any stable release past the first 30 items (REQ-RDX-006).
A release with `prerelease: false` is a stable promotion, and the baseline comparison uses the tag-form name (e.g. `rust-v0.161.0`);
cross-check the npm channel with `npm view @openai/codex version`.
When a release body is a 1-line title (alpha-dense windows), reconstruct content from the commits API per the commits-API reconstruction procedure (`commits-api-reconstruction`)
and label every reconstructed item commit-topic-derived — never release-note text (REQ-RDX-007); the procedure's three steps are:
(1) When a release body is only a 1-line title, reconstruct the window's content from `gh api repos/openai/codex/commits` / `.../pulls` commit topics.
(2) Label every reconstructed item "commit-topic-derived" — never as release-note text.
(3) Elevate potential Tier 1 candidates by checking the PR body, not the commit title alone (the #49713-consistent procedure).

[HARD] Subagent boundary: this specialist MUST NOT prompt the user directly
(return a blocker report; the orchestrator owns the user-interaction channel). Return a
blocker report to the orchestrator per
`.claude/rules/moai/core/agent-common-protocol.md` § User Interaction Boundary.

### Phase 2 — Diff & Categorize

Filter and classify CC entries newer than `since_version` (strict semver greater-than).
If no CC entries: emit "No new CC versions since vX.Y.Z", terminate **only the CC axis**, and
keep executing the codex and best-practices axes in this run — a CC-null delta must never end
the run while another axis remains unexecuted (REQ-RDX-015).

**Codex axis classification** (same run): consume the Runner codex-lens theme rows (the
`CODEX_THEME_CHECKLIST` themes: thread / rollout / subagent / compaction / MCP / other),
curate each observed item into Tier 1/2/3, and judge stability promotion against `since_codex`.
Alpha-window themes remain watch-list observations: adoption judgment happens only when the
theme lands in a stable release — never report an alpha-window theme as adopted drift
(REQ-RDX-009).

| Tier | Impact | Keywords / Signals |
|------|--------|-------------------|
| Tier 1 — Critical | Hooks, agents, skills, plugins, sub-agents, MCP protocol, permissions, settings.json schema | hook, agent, skill, plugin, subagent, mcp, permissions, settings, frontmatter |
| Tier 2 — Important | TUI, CLI, statusline, worktree, headless, session management, memory | tui, statusline, worktree, headless, session, memory, /clear, slash command |
| Tier 3 — Minor | Voice, remote, platform-specific, UI-only, analytics | voice, remote, windows, linux, mac, ui, analytics, telemetry |

Output a structured Markdown table (Version | Category | Tier | Summary | Impact on moai-adk-go) plus `total_items`, `tier1_count`, `tier2_count`, `tier3_count`.

> **Shell discipline when counting.** Derive each count with a plain, separate command — one
> `grep -c` or one `awk` invocation per quantity. Do NOT assemble a compound `for` loop or a
> runtime-generated `sed`/`awk` program to produce several counts at once: a sweep running inside
> a worktree has that refused by the worktree guard ("too complex to verify that it stays inside
> the worktree"), costing a refused-call retry every time. Observed on Claude Code 2.1.263,
> 2.1.257, and 2.1.267 — the guard did not relax. Detail:
> `.claude/rules/moai/workflow/worktree-integration.md` § Refused Commands in a Worktree-Isolated Session.

> **Runner integration**: when the orchestrator wants the per-version impact
> tables produced in parallel (read-only), it launches the Runner's research
> sweep with `args.versionDeltas` (CC lens) and `args.codexDeltas` (codex lens).
> The Runner returns the aggregated CC impact tables plus the codex theme rows;
> this specialist consumes them for Phases 3-7. The Runner is read-only
> and never prompts the user.

### Phase 3 — Cross-Reference Official Docs

[HARD] Execute ALL doc-fetch calls in parallel (AGENTS.md §5). Which tool performs the fetch depends on the session backend:

| Backend | Fetch tool |
|---------|-----------|
| Claude (`moai cc`, and the `moai cg` leader pane) | `WebFetch` |
| GLM (`moai glm`, and `moai cg` GLM teammate panes) | `mcp__web_reader__webReader` — preload with `ToolSearch(query: "select:mcp__web_reader__webReader")` |

Under a GLM backend the built-in `WebFetch` is PROHIBITED: it routes through the 529-prone
z.ai gateway. SSOT: `.claude/rules/moai/core/glm-web-tooling.md` § HARD Routing Table
(named anti-pattern AP-GWT-002).

The URL set is identical on either backend (canonical `code.claude.com` form — two
consecutive sweeps observed every fetch of the legacy-host `/en/docs/claude-code/*` path
canonicalize to `code.claude.com/docs/en/*`; SPEC-RELUP-DUALAXIS-001 D6 pins the
canonical shape):
```
Parallel fetch (single message):
  - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/hooks
  - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/sub-agents
  - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/skills
  - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/plugins
  - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/mcp
  - https://code.claude.com/docs/en/settings
```
For each Tier 1/2 item: annotate with `doc_url` and `stable_signature`. A fetch failure on either backend → note "doc unavailable at fetch time"; do not block.

### Phase 4 — Generate Update Plan

- `tier1_count + tier2_count < 10` AND no `--master-spec` → small plan: `.moai/research/cc-update-YYYYMMDD.md`.
- `tier1_count + tier2_count >= 10` OR `--master-spec` → umbrella SPEC: `.moai/specs/SPEC-V3R4-CC2X-ADOPT-NNN/research.md` (NNN: next sequential).

Plan structure: Executive Summary, Tier 1/2 tables, Tier 3 summary, Cross-Cutting Concerns, Recommended Child SPEC Decomposition (umbrella path), References, Open Questions. Skip if `--docs-only`.

### Phase 5 — User Report & Approval (human gate — specialist-held)

[HARD] Subagent boundary: return a blocker report with a 4-option decision matrix.
The orchestrator surfaces the user-decision prompt + re-delegates with the user's selection.
4 options (orchestrator presents, first = recommended):
- A. "전체 동기화 진행 (권장)" — Phase 6 docs + Phase 7 commit+PR.
- B. "플랜만 생성, 문서 업데이트 없음" — save plan file, exit.
- C. "SPEC 스텁 추가 생성" — plan + Phase 6 docs + empty child SPEC dirs.
- D. "중단" — keep state file, exit.

If `--dry`/`--report-only`: skip the blocker report, auto-select Option B.

### Phase 6 — Documentation Updates (precondition: Option A or C)

[HARD] same-PR 4-locale sync for non-bulk content changes. [HARD] URL blacklist:
`docs.moai-ai.dev`, `adk.moai.com`, `adk.moai.kr` forbidden — use `adk.mo.ai.kr`.

Delegate to manager-docs (foreground, `run_in_background: false`): update
`docs-site/content/{ko,en,ja,zh}/...` + `README.md` + `README.ko.md` (ko canonical,
en/ja/zh translations; Mermaid TD-only; run `scripts/docs-i18n-check.sh`).

If Option C: also create child SPEC stub directories (orchestrator-direct).

### Phase 7 — Persist State & PR (human gate — specialist-held)

Step 7a — Update `.moai/state/last-cc-version.json` (read-first pattern).

Step 7a-codex — Update `.moai/state/last-codex-version.json` (read-first pattern) in the SAME
run (REQ-RDX-003 — a CC-only write leaving the codex baseline stale is prohibited). Advance
`last_analyzed_version` only to the highest codex stable version this run fully analyzed and
curated (last-analyzed semantics — an observed-but-unanalyzed promotion stays a pending delta);
append the curated range to `analysis_history`.

Step 7b — Delegate to manager-git (`run_in_background: false`):
- Branch: `chore/cc-update-YYYYMMDD` (small) or `feat/cc-update-YYYYMMDD` (umbrella), squash merge.
- Commit (Conventional): `chore(release-update): track CC vX.Y.Z..vA.B.C upstream changes`.
- PR body: Summary + Changes + Merge Strategy (squash) + Verification + `🗿 MoAI <email@mo.ai.kr>`.
- Labels: `type:chore, area:docs-site, priority:P2`.

Skip if `--dry`/`--report-only`.

### Phase 7.5 — Improvement-Findings Emission (mandatory, REQ-HRR-006)

As the harness run's final act BEFORE the completion summary, emit the
structured improvement findings discovered during Phases 1-7. This step is
mandatory for every run (including `--dry`); it is the active signal source
that feeds the post-run push doctrine (see
`.claude/skills/moai/workflows/harness.md` § post-run push).

Each finding MUST conform to the REQ-HRR-003 5-field shape:

```jsonc
"findings": [
  {
    "surface": ".claude/commands/harness/<name>.md",  // improvement target
    "kind": "friction",                                // drift | gap | friction | defect
    "summary": "<one-line description of the friction>", // string
    "confidence": 0.75,                                // conservative run-time estimate
    "suggested_tier": "auto_update"                    // rule | auto_update
  }
]
```

- **Kind vocabulary** — reuse the `internal/harness/harnessrun/types.go` constants
  (`KindDrift` / `KindGap` / `KindFriction` / `KindDefect` → `drift` / `gap` /
  `friction` / `defect`). Do NOT invent parallel vocabulary.
- **Confidence sourcing (REQ-HRR-004)** — `confidence` is a conservative run-time
  estimate grounded in the manifest `learning.confidence_floor` (0.70). It MUST
  NOT reuse `learner.go`'s `defaultConfidence` (1.0) — that constant is
  tier-ladder specific and its reuse would disguise an unmeasured value as a
  measured one (verification-claim-integrity §1). With no supporting evidence,
  emit the floor value (0.70) and flag the finding as an estimate.
- **Empty findings** — when no improvement signal exists, emit `"findings": []`
  (an empty array). Field presence is mandatory: it distinguishes "no signal"
  from "signal absent" (REQ-HRR-003). NEVER omit the field.
- **Truncation** — if findings exceed `learning.max_findings_per_run`, truncate
  to the limit and note the truncation in the summary.

[HARD] Subagent boundary (REQ-HRR-008): this specialist returns ONLY the
structured findings (or a blocker report if a user decision is needed). It
MUST NOT call `AskUserQuestion` directly — the orchestrator collects the
findings, drives the `harness_run:` reserved-namespace producer, and runs the
Tier-4 Application Gate `AskUserQuestion` round. Reuse the existing Phase 1/5
blocker-report pattern (return a structured `## Missing Inputs` report; the
orchestrator surfaces the user-decision prompt and re-delegates).

### Phase 8 — Completion

State completion. Print summary (analysis range, plan file path, PR url, next
step `/moai plan SPEC-V3R4-CC2X-ADOPT-NNN`). For multi-session (plan > 20 items),
return a blocker report with a paste-ready resume message per
`.claude/rules/moai/workflow/session-handoff.md`.

Axis gate (REQ-RDX-015): the completion summary aggregates the execution status of all three
axes — CC, codex, best-practices — and MUST NOT be emitted while any axis remains unexecuted.
Record per-axis status (executed / skipped + reason) in the summary.

## Best-Practices Axis (standing procedure — every sweep)

Per-sweep scan of official publishing surfaces (REQ-RDX-012): Anthropic
engineering/research posts and the Claude docs release pages listed in Phase 3,
plus OpenAI blog posts and the Codex docs/release pages the codex axis touches.
Record the BP item inventory for the sweep — title, source URL, publish date,
candidate MoAI surfaces. The inventory is the axis's recorded deliverable; its
items are the only eligible grounds for card-issuance or docs-sync proposals.

**source-first enforcement (REQ-RDX-013)**: a BP item backs a proposal (card
issuance, docs-sync recommendation) ONLY after its source article has been fetched
verbatim (source-first verbatim patch). Search-result summaries and secondary
sources are report-only leads — never proposal grounds. Procedural grounds: the
2026-10-08 sweep's BP-1 item carried a wrong publish date (2026-10 from a search
snippet) until the verbatim fetch corrected it to 2026-04-08 — snippet dating is a
measured failure mode, not a hypothetical one.

**Named deliverable (REQ-RDX-014)**: the BP axis produces an HTML proposal report —
the sweep's BP findings rendered as a single HTML report naming each candidate
item, its verbatim-fetched source, and the proposed MoAI surface.

## Delegation Map

| Phase | Delegated to | Mode |
|-------|-------------|------|
| 1 | Self (cache) → Orchestrator (blocker report for the user-decision prompt) | — |
| 2-4 | Self (direct); per-version sweep optionally via Runner (read-only) | — |
| 5 | Orchestrator (blocker report for the user-decision prompt) | — |
| 6 | manager-docs subagent | foreground |
| 7 | manager-git subagent | foreground |

## Anti-Patterns

| Anti-Pattern | Correct Approach |
|--------------|-----------------|
| Calling the user-decision channel directly (Phase 1/5) | Return blocker report; orchestrator surfaces the user-decision prompt + re-delegates |
| Updating only `docs-site/content/ko/` | Delegate to manager-docs with all 4 locales |
| Writing to `internal/template/templates/` | DEV-ONLY specialist; never touches templates/ |
| `--rebase` / force-push / `develop` branch | Use `--squash` chore PR via manager-git |
| Forbidden URLs (docs.moai-ai.dev, adk.moai.com, adk.moai.kr) | Use only `adk.mo.ai.kr` |
| Inlining the research sweep approval into the Runner | Runner is read-only; approval is specialist/orchestrator-held |
