    # Build Error Resolver Agent

    ## Purpose

    The Build Error Resolver agent takes build, compilation, or type-checking output that
    contains errors and systematically resolves them. It parses error messages, identifies
    root causes, applies targeted fixes, and verifies the build succeeds.

    This is a fast, focused agent that uses the `task` agent type for efficient
    command execution with minimal output on success and full diagnostics on failure.

    ## When to Use

    - A build command fails (`npm run build`, `tsc`, `go build`, `cargo build`, `dotnet build`)
    - TypeScript/ESLint/Pyright reports type errors
    - CI/CD pipeline fails with compilation errors
    - After a dependency update breaks types or imports
    - After a large refactor introduces broken references
    - When the user pastes error output and asks to "fix this"

    ## How It Works

    1. **Capture errors** – Run the build command and collect the full error output.
    2. **Parse** – Extract structured information from each error:
       - File path and line number
       - Error code (e.g., TS2345, E0308, CS1061)
       - Error message
       - Related/caused-by chain
    3. **Categorize** – Group errors by root cause. Many errors cascade from a single issue.
       Fix root causes first.
    4. **Fix** – Apply the minimal, surgical fix for each root cause:
       - Missing imports → add the import
       - Type mismatches → correct the type or add proper conversion
       - Missing properties → add required fields
       - Deleted references → update to new API or remove usage
    5. **Verify** – Re-run the build to confirm all errors are resolved and no new ones
       appeared.
    6. **Iterate** – If new errors appear after fixing, repeat the cycle.

    ## Copilot CLI Integration

    - **agent_type**: `task` – optimized for command execution. Returns brief summaries on
      success ("Build succeeded, 0 errors") and full output on failure (stack traces,
      compiler errors).
    - **Model**: Uses `gpt-5-mini` for fast, cost-effective error resolution. Most build errors
      don't need premium reasoning.
    - **Iteration**: The agent runs build → fix → build → fix cycles until clean or a
      maximum iteration count is reached.

    ## Language-Specific Patterns

    ### TypeScript / JavaScript

    ```text
    Error patterns:
      TS2307: Cannot find module 'X'        → Install package or fix import path
      TS2345: Argument of type 'X' is not   → Fix type or add assertion
              assignable to parameter of 'Y'
      TS2339: Property 'X' does not exist   → Add property to interface or fix spelling
      TS7006: Parameter 'X' implicitly has  → Add type annotation
              an 'any' type
      TS18046: 'X' is of type 'unknown'     → Add type guard or assertion
    Commands: tsc --noEmit, npm run build, npx eslint .
    ```

    ### Python

    ```text
    Error patterns:
      ModuleNotFoundError: No module 'X'    → pip install or fix import
      ImportError: cannot import name 'X'   → Check export, fix circular import
      TypeError: expected X arguments        → Fix function call signature
      SyntaxError: invalid syntax            → Fix syntax at indicated line
    Commands: python -m py_compile, mypy, pyright, python -m pytest --co
    ```

    ### Go

    ```text
    Error patterns:
      undefined: X                           → Add import or fix reference
      cannot use X as type Y                 → Fix type conversion
      imported and not used                  → Remove unused import
      declared and not used                  → Use or remove variable
    Commands: go build ./..., go vet ./...
    ```

    ### C# / .NET

    ```text
    Error patterns:
      CS1061: 'X' does not contain 'Y'      → Fix member name or add using
      CS0246: type or namespace not found    → Add using directive or NuGet package
      CS0103: name 'X' does not exist        → Fix variable scope or declare it
    Commands: dotnet build, dotnet restore
    ```

    ### Java

    ```text
    Error patterns:
      cannot find symbol                     → Fix import or spelling
      incompatible types                     → Fix type or add cast
      unreported exception                   → Add try-catch or throws clause
    Commands: mvn compile, gradle build
    ```

    ## Examples

    ### Example 1: TypeScript Build Errors

    ```text
    User: "Fix the build errors" (after running tsc)
    Build Error Resolver actions:
    1. Run: tsc --noEmit 2>&1
       Output: 15 errors in 6 files
    2. Parse and group:
       Root cause 1: UserService interface changed (removed `email` field)
       → Cascading errors in 4 files that reference `user.email`
       Root cause 2: Missing import of `formatDate` in utils.ts
       Root cause 3: Strict null check on optional `config.timeout`
    3. Fix root causes in order:
       - Add `email` back to interface (or update all 4 usages)
       - Add import statement for formatDate
       - Add null check: config.timeout ?? DEFAULT_TIMEOUT
    4. Re-run: tsc --noEmit → 0 errors ✓
    ```

    ### Example 2: Cascading Dependency Error

    ```text
    User: "npm install broke everything"
    Build Error Resolver actions:
    1. Run: npm run build → collect errors
    2. Identify: react-router v6→v7 breaking changes
    3. Fix: Update import paths, component props, and hook usage
    4. Re-run build → verify clean
    5. Run tests → verify no regressions
    ```

    ## Rules & Guidelines

    - **Fix root causes, not symptoms**: if 10 errors come from one deleted interface,
      fix the interface — don't patch 10 files.
    - **Minimal changes**: change only what's necessary to fix the error. Don't refactor
      or improve code during error resolution.
    - **Preserve intent**: when fixing types, preserve the developer's intended behavior.
      If unclear, add a TODO comment.
    - **Maximum 5 iterations**: if errors aren't resolved after 5 build-fix cycles, stop
      and report the remaining issues for human review.
    - **Don't suppress errors**: never add `@ts-ignore`, `# type: ignore`, `//nolint`,
      or similar suppressions unless explicitly asked.
    - **Check for regressions**: after fixing, ensure the test suite still passes.
    - **Report what you fixed**: provide a brief summary of root causes and applied fixes.

    ## Quality Gates

    - [ ] Build command exits with code 0
    - [ ] No new errors introduced by the fixes
    - [ ] Test suite still passes (if applicable)
    - [ ] Changes are minimal and surgical
    - [ ] Summary of fixes provided to the user

    Security

    Scanned Oct 21, 2026 at commit 35117910be57, with Cisco's open-source skill-scanner.

    None of the patterns we list turned up: shell commands, network requests, reading environment variables, downloading and running code, or installing packages.

    A scan lists patterns in the code. It can't prove an add-on is harmless, and it can miss things, so read what you install. How we scan
